Dear Mum and Dad,
Well, here I am on my way to Planet
Zumbart! We are due to arrive early next month and I'm very excited after such a long journey on
the spaceship. It's huge and reminds me a bit of the Starship Enterprise in the old series
Star Trek, although everything is more up to date and of course it's got all the latest
technology. If you can imagine what it would be like on a long-distance cruise, perhaps to somewhere
far away like Australia, then you'll get the picture.
We've got a very comfortable
cabin with our own little bathroom. You don't have a shower with water! They spray you with a
kind of liquid that smells wonderful but it's not wet. The cabin is actually quite big - there aren't any windows and of course you can't go out on deck, but
otherwise it's just like being on a boat at sea and it's much better than being on an
ordinary plane. There is a dining room where we have dinner every night with all the other space
travellers - you should see some of them! The ship has stopped off at
several other planets to take on passengers and there are some very strange 'people', I can
tell you!
It can get quite boring on such a long trip so they have a fully-equipped
entertainment room with Spacernet. It's like the Internet but it covers other planets too and
not just Earth. I've already been in touch with my host family on Zumbart and I have to say that
if all the Zumbartians are as friendly, we're going to have a really good time. They do have
some strange customs though, and I'm very glad they warned me about them before we
arrived.
Do you know that they don't actually eat any food? They take these little pills
that have all the vitamins and everything else that you need to be healthy. I would imagine that
nobody ever needs to go on a diet but I'm not sure that I'm going to get used to not eating
things like spaghetti and potatoes! The other strange thing is that they often don't need to
speak to anyone. Apparently the Zumbartians have learnt how to communicate by reading minds. The good
thing is that if you don't want anyone to read your thoughts then they won't be able to.
They said that it's not difficult and if I concentrate, then after a few weeks I'll be able
to do it too. They promised though, that they will talk to me. I would hate it if I couldn't
chat to people.
Anyway, I have to go now. I don't know exactly when you'll get this
- hopefully not too far into the future.
Lots of
love, Louise
